Course Overview
At Job Skills Training Academy, our course is designed to train individuals aspiring to work and specialise in Residential Aged Care facilities. In this comprehensive course, you will learn to deliver high-quality care and support to elderly individuals, promoting their well-being and enhancing their quality of life. The curriculum covers a range of essential topics, including person-centred care, effective communication, support for individuals with dementia, and the management of complex needs, to gain expertise in managing and supporting individuals with dementia and other complex conditions.

Training Location
Unit 2/22 Winton Rd, Joondalup WA 6027. The venue is only a 10-minute walk from Joondalup Train Station, and is very conveniently located close to Mitchell Freeway – Hodges Drive Exit. There is ample parking on site.
Delivery & Duration
This course is delivered in a classroom environment through a combination of face-to-face (at the venue) as well as virtual mode. The duration of classroom delivery is approximately 21 weeks followed by a work placement of 120 hours (3 weeks), which will be organised by JSTA towards the end of your classroom training. Classes will be held 4 days a week (Mon – Thurs) from 9am – 4:30pm. We have a rolling intake which allows you to start the course almost anytime.
Course Units
To achieve this qualification, students must demonstrate competency in 15 units. The package consists of 9 core units and 6 elective units as listed below:
Core:
- CHCADV001 Facilitate the interests and rights of clients
- CHCAGE001 Facilitate the empowerment of older people
- CHCAGE003 Coordinate services for older people
- CHCAGE004 Implement interventions with older people at risk
- CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia
- CHCCCS006 Facilitate individual service planning and delivery
- CHCCCS011 Meet personal support needs
- CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing
- CHCCCS025 Support relationships with carers and families
- CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
- CHCLEG003 Manage legal and ethical compliance
- CHCPAL001 Deliver care services using a palliative approach
- CHCPRP001 Develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships
- HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
- HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
Elective:
- CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services
- HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication
- CHCCCS026 Transport individuals
Work Placement
To achieve this qualification, the students must complete 120 hours of work in an Aged Care facility with some mandatory conditions as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the Units of Competency. A student would commence work placement once all the classroom training is attended/concluded.
Enrolment Requirements
There are no pre-requisites for this course. Although, you are required to have proficiency in Language, Literacy and Numeracy, to a minimum of ACSF level 3. This is assessed via an LLN test, which is completed on site, prior to enrolment. The test would normally take 15-20 minutes to complete. Once you have scored a suitable result, you are required to fill in the Enrolment form. You must have a USI (Unique Student Identifier) number to complete any Nationally Recognized Training.
Students are also required to provide the below documents for us to arrange their Work Placement:
- National Police Clearance
- Working with Children Check
- Updated Immunisation Record with all COVID as well as flu vaccinations
- NDIS Screening check (This is a requirement from aged care facilities even if you are only doing the ageing stream)
- Valid First Aid Certificate
- Hand Hygiene Certificate
- NDIS Orientation module
- Infection Control Certificate
Students will not be able to commence their Work Placement until all the documents are provided at least two weeks prior to placement commencement date. Please feel free to speak to our admin team should you require more information.
Eligibility
All applications will be assessed by the JSTA admin team on a case-by-case basis. Students will be required to submit valid forms of photo ID, proof of citizenship / residency / visa status and complete a student enrolment form. You are eligible for the course if you have left school, your primary place of residence is in Western Australia, and you are:
- An Australian citizen / permanent visa holder; or
- Holders of a sub-class 300, 309, 444, 445, 449, 461, 785, 786, 790, or 820 visa; or
- Secondary holders of a temporary visa of sub-class 188, 457, 482, 489, 491 or 494 visa; or
- Holders of a Bridging Visa E (subclasses 050 and 051) where the visa holder has made a valid application for a visa of subclass 785 or 790; or
- Holders of a bridging visa who are eligible to work, and who have made a valid application for a subclass 866.
Free courses
Australian Citizens, Permanent residents and some visa holders are eligible for the Fee Free Government Subsidised Course. Eligibility also depends on your current employment status. Student tuition fees are indicative only and are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Additional fees may apply such as resource fees and other fees. Please provide information about your residency and employment status to determine if you qualify for these benefits.
You may be eligible for free training if you are:
- An Australian citizen or permanent visa holder
- A holder of a subclass 300, 309, 444, 445, 449, 461, 785, 786, 790, or 820 visa
- A secondary holder of a temporary visa under subclass 188, 457, 482, 489, 491, or 494
- A holder of Bridging Visa E (subclass 050 or 051) who has lodged a valid application for subclass 785 or 790
- A holder of a bridging visa with work rights who has lodged a valid application for subclass 866
Please note that students holding the following visa types are not eligible for free training:
- Visitor visas
- Student visas
- Training visas
- Bridging visa holders who have not lodged a valid subclass 866 application
- Any visa type not listed above
Fee for Service Pricing
Students who are not eligible for any government incentive can still enrol and complete the course by paying $2700. A $1200 (non-refundable) deposit is required to secure a place of study. The balance of tuition fee can be spread out on a payment plan. The tuition fee amount should be paid in full prior to starting the Work Placement.
